28/07/14: Company Director Nigel Wykes embarks on his well earned retirement
After 34 years of loyal service to the Whitaker Group, our Mersey Director, Mr Nigel Wykes has decided to take his well earned retirement.
During his time with the Whitaker Group Nigel has progressed from Traffic Manager to Director, and under his careful stewardship the Merseyside operation has evolved from a 'fly by the seat of your pants' barging company to a world class operator of coastal tankers.
Nigel has been a leading and well respected character within the Mersey Maritime scene, and his knowledge and expertise will be sorely missed by the Whitaker Board...even though it is hoped that the relationship and friendship which has built up over the years will continue into the future.
Anything from a rat catcher to radio operator, pilot to port director Nigel was notorious for always having the relevant telephone number readily available 24/7 in his battered old Filofax
Although acknowledging that Nigel is a very private person, the company could not let his retirement pass without marking the occasion, and therefore a luncheon party was held in Hull to recognise his services to the company, and to say a formal thank you.
The above photo shows the MD Mark Whitaker and the Head Office staff making a small presentation to Nigel and Denise and wishing them all the very best for a long happy and healthy retirement.
